The formation of the Manenberg Community Development Trust (MCDT)
Consol Glass has been mining silica sand in the Manenberg area for more than 50 years. As part of Consol’s social responsibility, a decision was made to make some dormant land available to the community that all could benefit from.
In 2006 Consol initiated the registration of the MCDT. The registration of the Trust was finalized at the High Court in 2008 under registration number IT 4044/2008. The composition of the Trust is as follow:
- 2 members from Consol
- 2 members from Manenberg Development Coordinating Structure (MDCS)
- 2 members from the Manenberg Ministers Fellowship
- 1 member from the Manenberg Community Police Forum (CPF)
The Trust was established as a legal entity to house the land asset as well as manage the activity on the property. Consol has donated seed capital which is being used to lobby for match funding.
