SPORT

Farnese Athletic Club

Farnese Athletic Club is a husband and wife initiative which focuses on disadvantaged youth. They compete in the Coco-Cola League and finished in first place in 2017. The Trust has given sponsorship towards transport to get to the Comrades Marathon as well as towards athletic apparel.

Manenberg Local Football Association

The Manenberg Local Football Association represents the amateur clubs in the area. Donations were made by the Trust towards equipment and gear as well as for the rental of their facilities.

Horse Riding Project

The Manenberg Horse Riding School has more than fifty members. It has assisted school dropouts to go back to school. It has won several provincial and national colours in the various disciplines of the Horse Riding spot. The project lends itself to discipline, job opportunities blacksmithing, grooming and horse race jockeys. It is envisaged that this project will be accommodated at the Waterfront premises and is part of the conceptual plan.

FUTURE PLANS

5-A-Side Soccer

Another prospect to get the youth involved in uplifting activities is for the formation of small artificial turf soccer pitches. Similar types of pitches can already be found in Hanover Park on Govan Mbeki Road. There is also the opportunity to link up with Amandla EduFootball and facilitate the hosting of local tournaments. This will go a long way to bridging the divide between Manenberg and some of its surrounding neighbours such as Gugulethu.

Skateboard Park

The Trust became aware of the annual Kimberley Diamond Cup Skateboarding World Championships which was held at Kumba Iron Ore’s purpose build skateboarding park. After visiting the event and having some discussions with the president of the World Skateboarding Federation (WSF) it became quite evident that we had the ideal opportunity to replicate the event in the Manenberg community. This was followed up a couple of days later by a visit from their Park design team to our proposed premises.

A fairly detailed concept was developed by the design team and subsequently a formal letter of endorsement was given by the WSF to support such a project and potentially accommodate such world class events and championships at these premises.  Part of the proposal is the replication of the junior training academy that is being held at the Kimberley Park to specifically focus on underprivileged children.  This facility could contribute to the economic growth of Manenberg and the surrounding areas.

Basketball

Basketball is an increasingly popular sport in South Africa especially among the youth.  This is another opportunity to not only create another positively competitive environment, but also the possibility to do proper coaching and linking up to official bodies such as the Western Cape Basketball Association as well as the Western Cape Government MOD Centre Basketball Programme.  The facility could also be made available to schools in the area and the general public at large.
